CUSTODIAN / MAINTENANCE WORKER

 

Position Overview

The Custodian / Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing routine facility work in the capacity of repair, general maintenance and assisting in set-up/tear down of weekday ministries, as well as acting as key liaison for building contractors for this 70 000+ square foot church and daycare facility, its equipment and property.

Duties Overview

Under the supervision of the Director of Administration, the Custodian / Maintenance Worker will perform both physical and facilitation duties as described as well as interact with contractors, staff, ministry workers, and the Board appointed Facility Advisory Team to ensure that the church building and property remains clean and in good repair and ministry needs are met..

 

Duties Specific

General Maintenance and Repair of Building, Equipment and Grounds

  • ensure that building and equipment are maintained in a safe, clean and orderly condition and comply with health and fire regulations
  • carry out Maintenance Work Order requests in a timely fashion
  • carpentry: minor repairs as needed
  • plumbing: identifies and performs basic repairs of plumbing leaks or breaks; opens clogged lines and drains; replaces washers and other minor parts; maintains and monitors septic system; arranges for major repairs as needed
  • painting: applies and prepares various surfaces for paint, enamel, lacquer, varnish or stain; repairs wall coverings
  • grounds; will ensure grounds are maintained in a clean and orderly manner, and entranceways are shoveled and salted during winter months, will act as key liaison for landscape/snow removal contractor
  • waste removal; empty out garbages, put out recycling bins weekly and act as primary contact for recycling and waste removal companies
  • other related duties as required

Security

  • maintain and track key control
  • program door codes and monitor activity
  • primary contact for security company
  • on call for after hours emergencies from Monday – Thursday
  • access and arrange for repair of video surveillance system
  • ensure fire panel system is functioning correctly at all times
  • maintenance of the emergency evacuations program
  • other related duties as required

Facilitation

  • set up and tear down of ministry related equipment during office hours
  • key liaison for facility volunteer(s) and contractors including arranging for service, follow up of work and seeking quotations as directed
  • other related duties as required

Administration

  • maintain a service schedule and arrange for service for fire panel/extinguishers, pest control, HVAC equipment, elevator, kitchen equipment, and other building specific equipment
  • perform bi-weekly site inspection and submit written report to Director of Administration for follow up
  • monitor expenditures and submit weekly expense sheets to Director of Administration for approval
  • other related duties as required

 

Qualifications

A spirit of cooperation, ability to take direction well and perform with grace under pressure are essential to this role. This position requires 3-5 years of experience in a similar role or a combination thereof as follows:

  • must have good working knowledge of methods used in maintenance including carpentry, plumbing, painting, groundskeeping, and repair of building facilities
  • must have good working knowledge of safety practices and procedures related to the building trades
  • ability to regularly perform moderate-to-heavy physical labour
  • ability to effectively use a variety of hand and power tools
  • ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships
  • basic working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, e-mail) programs
  • basic math skills (adding, subtracting, multiplication, division)
  • strong command of the English language both written and verbal
  • must possess a valid Ontario Driver's License
